Atlantic Family Iftar Dinners, Ramadan 2017
The Family Iftar Dinner program provides space for people of differing religious and cultural traditions to get-to-know one another in the cozy intimacy of each other’s homes and seeks to build community through casual conversation over a delicious meal with the motto "Open Doors, Open Minds, and Open Hearts".
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast by abstaining from consuming water or food during daylight hours. Iftar - or fast breaking - dinners take place each night once the sun sets. This is an important time not only for those who participate in Ramadan because of their faith but also an important time for us to share our tradition with our friends from different backgrounds over delicious food and through lively conversation. It is truly a special time when people of all backgrounds come together and share in the Iftar experience, learning about different cultures and faiths in the process.
Our host families offered the Iftar dinners every evening between June 2 - June 24. For these in-home Iftar dinners, individuals or families were matched based on professional interests and/or family characterisics. For example, families with similar aged children were matched so that everyone was engaged in the evening together. The hope is that all leave the evening completely nourished (i.e., joyful, enlightened, and with new friends).
We look forward to hosting you during this special time next year and match you with a local host family. It is a lovely experience you will not want to miss.
Please look for our Iftar dinner announcements in the month prior to the 2018 month of Ramadan, May 16 - June 14, 2018. Note: Fasting is not required for guests.
