Islam and Democracy in Turkey: Challenges and Opportunities

The Atlantic Institute Tallahassee organized a distinguished speakers’ series program in Tallahassee with Mustafa Akyol, a renowned Turkish political commentator from Turkey, on April 23, 2012.
The program was partnered by The Center for Global Engagements at FSU.
Mustafa Akyol is a columnist for two Turkish newspapers, Hurriyet Daily News and Star. His articles have also appeared in Foreign Affairs, Newsweek,Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune and many other journals and newspapers. He also appears regularly on Turkish TV, onpolitical discussion shows.
Starting with a reception with warm dialogues, Dr. John Mayo, director of William A. Kerr Intercultural Education & Dialogue Initiative, welcomed the participants.There were about one hundred guests. Mr. Akyol gave valuable information about the history of democracy in Islam and Turkey. He also shared his ideas about the current political issues in Turkey. At the end of the program, there was a book signing by Mustafa Akyol. Particpants could purchase his book "Islam Without Extremes" and make it sign by its author and talk personally with him.
