11th Annual Art & Essay Contest Awards Ceremony
The Atlantic Institute's Annual Art & Essay Contest awards ceremony was held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 in the South Terraces, Auditorium at 115 Perimeter Center Pl NE, Atlanta, GA 30346. This event was a great success, with approximately 150 people in attendance. The ceremony featured an exhibition of the winning art work and essays, as well as inspiring remarks delivered by Leanne Rubenstein, Executive Director at Compassionate Atlanta; Dr. John L. Ford, Advisory Board Member at the Atlantic Institute and former Senior Vice President and Dean of Campus Life at Emory University; and Turan Kilic, President and CEO at the Atlantic Institute.
Dr. Ford offered a moving opening speech, reflecting upon the theme of the 2017 contest, "Compassion in Action... Caring Matters!" He began by reminding the students that no one is too small to make a difference in this world. After examining the meaning of the word compassion and providing examples of the disastrous effects of dehumanizing others throughout history, Dr. Ford cited recent neuroscience research that supports the Dali Lama's assertion that "If you want to make others happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." This compelling discussion emphasized the importance of compassion in today's world and encouraged students to continue practicing compassion in action in their daily lives.
The Annual Art & Essay contest has always been representative of the Atlantic Institute’s goals to facilitate dialogue and bridge cultures around the globe. For a better world of peace and understanding, we develop public awareness for diverse cultures, beliefs, traditions and opinions. Through a wide range of activities that bring local community members from various ethnic and religious backgrounds together, we seek to proactively contribute to educational, cultural and social issues in our community. The Contest puts these goals of peace, dialogue and diversity through education into practice.
Congratulations again to our winners for their outstanding accomplishments.
